'Holistic view' needed for data quality projects
Feb 3 2011, 09:43 AM
Businesses should take a "holistic view" when setting up a data quality initiative, an expert has said.
Speaking to the IT Business Edge website, David Loshin, President of the consulting, training and system design and implementation company Knowledge Integrity, explained a failure to do so is one common mistake that often crops up with data quality schemes.
He stated it is necessary to recognise that a business works as a system, even when the jobs of employees are taken into account.
"The tools won't solve the problem unless there are processes for using the tools and the right people to execute the processes," Mr Loshin went on to explain.
His comments follow a recent report from the International Data Corporation, which stated companies that gave their workers more training on data quality issues performed better on tasks related to the issue than those businesses which spent less time educating their employees.
