Air passenger data 'must be protected'
Mar 30 2010, 11:59 AM
The privacy and civil liberties of travellers must be protected if the EU is to continue sharing passenger data with the US, an Irish politician has warned.
Fine Gael MEP Gay Mitchell is urging EU Commissioner for Justice Viviane Reding to ensure that security measures are balanced with protection for passengers, the Sunday Business Post Reports.
He said it is important that parliamentarians do not "sign blank cheques".
"I have no difficulty with providing air passenger details in principle. However, I have concerns about the protection of privacy and the rights of law-abiding people," Mr Mitchell explained.
The European Parliament has been urged by US authorities not to scrap an agreement that has been in place since the 2001 terror attacks.
A bank data-sharing deal with the US was rejected by EU politicians last month.
It is important to ensure that combating terrorism does not become worse than the problem itself, Mr Mitchell added.
