Alarming number of companies don’t back up data electronically
Dec 12 2011, 16:46 PM
Around 40 per cent of companies in Europe still rely on tape to back up important data, according to the EMC European Disaster Recovery Survey 2011.
The survey found that businesses like to save money on information backup technology, spending only ten per cent of their information technology budgets on data management.
The 21st century has seen an explosion of information (known as 'big data') which carries great consequence when not managed correctly. The study revealed that businesses will have to deal with around 40 times more information each year over the next decade, volumes which far exceed the functionality of tapes.
Commenting in Inside Ireland, Jason Ward, EMC Ireland’s country manager, has highlighted the short-sighted nature of using old technology to back up their data:
“Business preparedness for routine IT disruption or more significant incidences of advanced cyber crime starts with a next-generation backup approach, not a reliance on traditional back-up tapes which employees in some Irish public and private-sector organisations still take home at night," he said.
“Businesses and public-sector organisations can dramatically cut costs and become leaner by getting rid of tape which is cumbersome and vulnerable to security breaches."
