Barnardo's signs up to ContactPoint
Aug 13 2008, 09:30 AM
Children's charity Barnardo's has taken the lead in protecting the details of children, which should help manage its data and keep track of high risk cases.
The charity has upgraded its IT systems to link directly with the government's ContactPoint database, which is a planned database of all children in England.
ContactPoint was set up following the murder of Victoria Climbie in 2000 and Barnardo's information services director Bob Darby hopes the move will help put a stop to any future cases.
"If a straightforward, obvious, sensible IT system gets us there, we are absolutely for it," he said.
"We don't want another case like Victoria Climbie and we have proved it works in trials."
The new way of managing the database should also help collaboration with other charities and authorities in future by giving more visibility into the whereabouts of children.
Barnardo's is expected to be the first of many to connect via the ContactPoint database, which has strict security measures involving identity authentication.
