Businesses 'don't realise their data is a mess'

Apr 28 2010, 13:09 PM

Businesses are often not aware that they have problems with data quality until an expert takes a look at it for them, it has been suggested.

Why New Systems Fail author Phil Simon told Data Quality Pro that of all the companies he has worked with on data projects, not one had ever carried out comprehensive data profiling or analysis before the project began.

"The client often doesn't know that its data is a mess until consultants get their hands dirty," he remarked.

"Many times they don't know that their data needs major purification."

Data assessment is the first thing companies need to look at, according to Jill Wanless, who runs the Data Quality from the Ground Up blog.

In another interview with Data Quality Pro recently, she indicated that it is vital that organisations understand the current state of their data so they can determine what activities need to be undertaken as a priority.
