Businesses 'failing to prevent data loss'
Apr 30 2010, 09:00 AM
British businesses are failing to safeguard their data, new research has revealed.
A study carried out by Quocirca and IT management provider CA found that 64% of companies do not use data loss prevention products at present.
The majority of businesses blamed a lack of time and resources on their failure to invest in this area.
Bob Tarzey, Analyst and Director at Quocirca, commented: "Recent high-profile data breaches demonstrate that electronically-stored data is often insufficiently cared for. This failure to protect data is costly, not least because of the level of fines now being imposed by regulators."
Failing to manage data properly can also cause reputational damage and loss of competitive advantage, he added.
Research carried out recently by BlockMaster security found that 18 per cent of workers have lost a USB stick or similar piece of equipment in the last three years.
Furthermore, the survey revealed that 42 per cent of workers mistakenly believe that handling a data breach costs less than £10,000.
