CIO job role to focus on data quality

Jul 15 2008, 18:11 PM

One of the world's largest computer companies has suggested there will be a shift in the focus of the role of the chief information officer.

In a move that underlines the importance of data quality to businesses, IBM's data governance council has predicted that over the next four years, the role of the chief information officer will change to be focused on data quality.

IBM data governance council chairman Steven Adler highlighted data quality as being key in any big business operation.

"The poor quality poses risks to the organization and people need to calculate that risk," he told SearchSecurity.com.

"These are really big organizational challenges because we have so much information."

IBM's data governance council is made up of 50 IBM partners and customers including Citibank, AMEX and Bank of America.

The prediction is one of many made by the council, which also suggested that data will become an asset on the corporate balance sheet.

Irish companies looking to ensure their data quality is up to the mark would be advised to consider seeking professional assistance.
