Companies 'must be reactive and proactive to improve data quality'

Jun 24 2010, 11:32 AM

Managers looking to improve data quality within their organisation should be proactive.

This is according to industry commentator Jim Harris, who said this approach is "highly recommended".

Writing for his OCDQ blog, he said: "Even though it is impossible to truly prevent every problem before it happens, … the more control enforced where data originates, means the better the overall quality will be for enterprise information."

Mr Harris noted that many organisations take a short-term response to improving data quality when something impacts on decision-critical information. However, he warned that this approach does not identify or address the root cause of the problem.

He added that effective data management requires both "reactive and proactive" action.

Writing recently for Data Flux, Dylan Jones said companies should carry out regular data quality assessments.

He noted that this will help to unearth any gaps and inaccuracies.

As a business models evolve, information management tends to lag behind it, "leaving defective data in its wake", Mr Jones added.
