Companies 'should take quality approach to management of information'
Oct 30 2009, 13:30 PM
Many businesses take the wrong approach when it comes to tackling data quality issues, it has been asserted.
Daragh O'Brien, Director of Publicity and Recruitment at the International Association for Information and Data Quality (IAIDQ), said that companies often have a narrow view of the issue.
"Far too often information quality is seen as just another project or phase in a project where the data gets cleaned as it is moved around systems," he explained.
Organisations that take this approach often fail to grasp that instead of improving data quality, they are delaying the impact of problems, Mr O'Brien continued.
He added that sustainable information quality programmes tackle the "softer issues" in the organisation, such as processes, culture and politics.
The IAIDQ is a not-for-profit, vendor-neutral professional organisation that aims to improve the quality of data around the world by supporting learning and promoting the issue.
