Consumers warned over Haiti email scams
Feb 16 2010, 12:15 PM
UK fraud prevention service Cifas is urging the public to exercise caution when opening emails relating to the Haiti earthquake disaster.
The organisation revealed that a "spate" of spam emails have been distributed by fraudsters looking to steal personal information and bank details from donors.
Cifas Communications Manager Richard Hurley said the criminals use emotional blackmail in order to con people and noted that the correspondence often appears very plausible.
"By combining hard-hitting language - often completely fictional or copied from a reputable source - with the apparent ease of making a donation, it is not difficult to see how these scams dupe people so convincingly," he added.
According to Cifas, anyone wanting to make a donation should do so via the website of a recognised charity.
The government announced plans earlier this week to invest £4.3 million over the next three years to tackle fraudsters using email scams and fake websites to target consumers.
