Contactless payment cards 'set to take off'
Apr 30 2010, 09:00 AM
British consumers are likely to see contactless payment technology across more high street stores in the near future, it has been claimed.
Jemma Smith, Head of PR at UK Payments, noted that the area of m-commerce -the purchase of goods through mobile devices - is likely to expand significantly.
"Looking forward we think the next big changes will come in two major areas. Mobile payments and more than mobile banking - the merger of card payments and mobile payments," she explained.
Ms Smith pointed out that high street store Boots has already introduced such systems.
She added that using contactless technology is a viable and convenient way to make low-value purchases.
The Home Office recently unveiled plans to protect consumers from phone-related crime, including a system to help users lock phones that have been stolen.
Official figures show that cases of mobile phone identity fraud rose by 70 per cent in 2009.
