ContactPoint database rolled out
Jan 30 2009, 12:01 PM
The UK government has announced that it is to begin roll-out of the £224 million ContactPoint data strategy, which is set to overhaul children's services in England through greater information-sharing.
From January 26th every local authority began training two workers to use the new system and at least 17 authorities commenced in-depth training processes and expect to put the database to use this spring.
Children's charities are also putting into place procedures to adopt the database management initiative into their working systems to ensure at-risk children are identified and receive help swiftly.
Kevin Williams, chief executive of Kids, told Children & Young People Now: "We see ContactPoint as being very beneficial for disabled children who typically have a range of professionals working with them."
ContactPoint will comprise a comprehensive contact data management strategy collating information such as a child's name, address, GP and school. The government has gone to great lengths to ensure that the identity verification details held are secure and can only be accessed by a limited number of authorised professionals.
The data strategy is designed to prevent tragedies such as the deaths of Baby P and Victoria Climbie occurring again.
