Data Protection Commissioner 'in talks over Irish identity cards'
Jan 29 2010, 13:21 PM
The Data Protection Commissioner is currently in talks with the Department of Social and Family Affairs over the introduction of public services identity cards, it has been reported.
According to the Irish Times, one of the key issues of concern for the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) is the decision to include PPS numbers on the card.
A spokesperson for the ODPC told the publication: "We would be concerned that the inclusion of a photograph, a signature and a number, such as the PPSN on the cards, could serve for the card to be considered to be a de facto national ID card."
The DPA is of the view that any move towards a national identity card scheme should only be done after "appropriate public debate".
In related news, the Irish Independent reported earlier this week that the cards will be capable of carrying fingerprints and eye scans.
