Data quality challenges 'occur in closed loop transactions'
Aug 5 2010, 09:45 AM
Data quality challenges can often occur in closed loop transactions, a columnist has said.
Writing on the Information Management website, Michael Volund stated that two examples of such deals include customer segmentation for marketing purposes or customer credit ratings based on predictive models.
He explained that data quality problems can occur if master data is changed when moving through the information supply chain.
"The results might be correct in the business intelligence environment, but when feeding the data back into the unchanged master data of the operational systems, discrepancies occur," Mr Volund explained.
Earlier this month, IT professionals looking to get their organisation's support for conducting data quality projects were advised to try and define the return on investment provided by the tangible business benefits provided by such work.
SmartData Collective blogger Jim Harris said that the task can be sold to financial decision makers on the basis of the mitigated risks, reduced costs and increased revenue it can offer.
