Data quality 'determined by business usability'
Jul 28 2010, 11:08 AM
Business owners should consider how useful the information they store and manage actually is when thinking about data quality, an expert has claimed.
Writing for Smart Data Collective, Jim Harris said some organisations mistakenly fall into the trap of "managing data for the sake of managing data".
He explained that while it is obviously preferable for companies to ensure all their data is complete and accurate, they must also consider the usefulness and relevance of this information.
The writer cited a recent blog post from Data Quality Pro's Dylan Jones, who pointed out that many firms allow a huge volume of valueless data to proliferate by failing to develop an archive strategy.
"This often results in the data that the organisation truly needs for continued success getting stuck in the long line of data waiting to be managed," Mr Harris explained.
According to Mr Jones, unchecked data growth can create numerous problems for businesses, including increased staffing and infrastructure costs, slower performance and increasingly complex data migration processes.
