Data quality 'enables better business decisions'
Jul 29 2010, 17:54 PM
Businesses need to make sure that the data they are spending time and money managing is useful to the business, it has been said.
According to Jim Harris, writer for the Obsessive-Compulsive Data Quality blog, many companies focus on making their data set complete and accurate to the point where they lose sight of its quality.
"Sometimes having more data only adds confusion instead of clarity, thereby becoming a distraction instead of helping you make a better decision," Mr Harris explained.
He suggested that better business decisions could be made by ensuring that any collated information is relevant to an organisation's operations, offering actual insight to managers.
The expert recently warned against being inattentive when using spellchecker facilities as they can sometimes choose a wrong word to replace one that is misspelled.
He said that on older systems, the unhyphenated word 'cooperation' was often replaced with 'Cupertino', the home of Apple headquarters, instead of 'co-operation'.
