Data quality for survival
Sep 9 2008, 08:42 AM
A data quality expert has suggested that the importance of data quality in business may be a matter of survival rather than simply the pursuit of perfection.
Ken Orr wrote in his Data Quality and Systems Theory report that "no serious information system has a data quality of 100 per cent".
"The real concern with data quality is to ensure not that the data quality is perfect, but that the quality of the data in our information systems is accurate enough, timely enough and consistent enough for the organisation to survive and make reasonable decisions," he is quoted as saying on Computerworld.com.
Mr Orr explained that while some data systems need just a simple clean-up, others could benefit from a complete overhaul.
Providing staff with both clean and correct data can help cut the frustration that comes with poor data quality and improve productivity as well as customer relations.
Investing in data quality may make a huge difference in terms of efficiency and economy.
