Data quality 'important in transportation management'
Sep 29 2009, 09:55 AM
One sector analyst has noted the importance of data quality in transportation management software.
Ed Holden, Editor-in-Chief of Manufacturing & Logistics IT Magazine, made his comments after the publication of a study by Panalpina, Capgemini, Oracle and Georgia Institute of Technology.
The research found that third-party logistics providers have problems obtaining enough data from shippers.
Mr Holden suggested that transportation management software is increasingly "getting traction" as it helps shipping organisations to work with third-party logistics providers more efficiently by placing items in an order of preference when they need to be delivered.
He noted that traditionally, shippers have relied on faxes and phone calls to deal with their logistical requirements, rather than upgrade to a system that has the capacity to automate processes such as dispatching.
"And, of course, then you're waiting for a return fax or a phone call and sometimes it never arrives," the sector commentator concluded.
