Data quality news: Green IT 'becoming more important'

Sep 30 2009, 10:08 AM

Data quality could be impacted by a shift in priorities for data centres that has been identified by one sector commentator.

Gartner Managing Vice-President Matthew Boon has stated that despite the ongoing economic downturn, environmental issues are still a high priority for data centre managers.

He made his comments as the research organisation announced the launch of its inaugural Gartner Green Data Centre Excellence Award, which will be presented to the eventual winner in March 2010 at the Gartner Infrastructure Operations and Data Centre Summit.

Mr Boon said: "Green IT initiatives in the data centre have moved beyond a tick in the box to being at the centre of IT investments."

He concluded by noting that sustainability has become more of a priority for data centre managers because it can reduce costs, which is a major concern in the current financial climate.

Earlier this month, Gartner published research indicating that more must be done to measure, monitor and improve data centre energy use.
