DWP 'increases IT budget'
Mar 19 2010, 12:04 PM
The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) has owned up to increasing its IT development budget by almost a third over the course of a year.
Last week, the department admitted in a written answer to parliament that it had spent £99 million more on information technology advancement in 2008-09 than in the previous financial year.
However, a DWP spokesman told GC News: "We have made huge efficiency savings on IT since 2004, reducing total costs from £1.071 billion to £987 million in 2008-09 and we expect these reductions to continue."
The body claims the rise in its development outlay to £303 million was necessary to cover self-service projects such as the introduction of jobseeker's allowance and state pensions online.
In January, Sureyy Canvoy of technology firm Intellect said any reduction in NHS IT spending should be managed carefully so as not to harm services and undermine the importance of technology in the health service.
