Expert offers database management tips

Companies have been offered some advice on how they can improve their data management.
Writing for BeyeNetwork, Tom Breur said that most organisations will experience data quality issues at some point.
"There are two fundamentally different ways of dealing with bad data: either you load all of the data 'as is' (and deal with the errors later) or you clean/scrub the data on the way in to the data warehouse (DW)," he noted.
Mr Breur added that there are pros and cons of both approaches, however, by dealing with data quality problems on the way in to the DW, it eliminates the need for another layer of storage.
"The disadvantage is that you are stuck with any choice you make with regards to how you treat erroneous records," he added.
Meanwhile, E-Health Insider reported last week that as part of the Department of Health's plans to introduce Quality Accounts, the NHS will be required to publish details relating to its data quality.
