Fisheries board calls for new data strategy

Sep 15 2009, 10:27 AM

The South Western Regional Fisheries Board is urging the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government to develop a new data strategy regarding seal and cormorant information.

According to the Irish Times, fishermen are concerned that the two species are threatening eel and salmon numbers.

Speaking to the newspaper, the board's Chief Executive Aidan Barry said: "We need to have a clear statement what the desired number of seals and cormorants is. Seal pups are perceived to have increased and cormorants are also perceived to have increased. We need the data."

An EU fisheries advisory commission concluded recently that there is a lack of scientific data relating to the damage caused by cormorants, which are currently a protected species.

In related news, a recent EU directive aimed at improving data quality in sheep tagging has been widely criticised by the Irish Farmers' Association.
