Government launches postcode tender process
Feb 2 2010, 12:16 PM
The tender process for a postal code system in Ireland has officially been launched by Communications Minister Eamon Ryan.
According to the Irish Times, tenders are currently being invited from consultants, with the system expected to cost between 10 million and 15 million to establish.
Mr Ryan has previously said they are vital, as the country needs a way of accessing and collating spatial data.
"A national postcode system will deliver benefits not only in terms of postal delivery but across the economy and in government planning," he commented.
However, Fine Gael Communications Spokesman Simon Coveney said the introduction of postcodes in rural Ireland will not be effective.
A government Working Group first recommended the introduction of postcodes in 2005, claiming that it would help to boost national competitiveness and assist with the provision of public services across Ireland.
Approximately 1.7 million addresses will need to be coded in total.
