Green data strategies are "easily achievable"
Apr 29 2010, 11:24 AM
There should be no problem in putting together a data centre strategy that is both cost and eco-friendly, one expert has suggested.
Redstone Converged Solutions' technical account director Roddy Adams wrote for the Computing website that many organisations are making a mistake by treating environmental and financial aims separately, when they can actually complement each other where this type of technology is concerned.
"Deliberations over a carbon-efficient or cost-efficient datacentre should not happen," he commented. "With greater cooling efficiency the prime factor in both these goals, a single green and lean strategy is easily achievable."
Mr Adams added that there is a growing trend for environmental modelling in UK data centres and said that a "significant" return on investment can be achieved by those merging together their cost-cutting and green strategies.
His remarks follow those of Greenpeace spokesman Tom Dowdall, who told BBC News recently that his organisation would like to see major IT companies use renewable energy to power their data centres.
