IDC: consolidate data to save energy and cash
Jun 20 2008, 16:22 PM
The International Data Corporation (IDC) has suggested companies consider data consolidation and cleansing solutions to save energy and money.
The IDC estimates that the total amount spent on powering and cooling spinning disks last year was more than 640 million worldwide, and suggests reducing the volume of data may help the environment and company profits.
IDC vice president for storage and semiconductors David Reinsel said that companies are continuing to add storage capacity at a rate of over 50 per cent per year, pushing up the cost of powering and cooling spinning disks within data centres.
"Vendors must do more to promote and enable well-rounded green storage strategies which include data centre redesign, data consolidation and data reduction," he said.
Aside from the energy and cost savings, regular data cleansing and suppressing can improve data quality and accuracy, ultimately improving efficiency and revenue.
