IDMA backs postal liberalisation plans
Jul 25 2007, 16:54 PM
The Irish Direct Marketing Association (IDMA) has registered its support for the planned liberalisation of the European postal market.
Under plans announced by the European Commission ten years ago, January 2009 was set down as the date for full liberalisation of all postal markets across member states and that target was confirmed last October in a statement from the commission.
The move will see a variety of companies taking control of post across the EU, with competition aimed at ensuring value-for-money for consumers and an end to state monopolies.
Commenting on the plans, the IDMA has stated: "We believe that full postal liberalisation has the potential to bring considerable benefits both to our members and to the wider Irish business community."
However, the organisation has also said it will look forward to the liberalisation of the market "with caution", calling for widespread debate within the postal industry about the future of the postal industry.
