Ireland could emerge as the capital of big data
Feb 16 2012, 17:08 PM
Private data storage companies are set to unite with the Government of Ireland to create a cloud innovation centre that has the potential to make Ireland the capital of big data.
The new cloud infrastructure will provide two primary functions. The first of which is to allow SMEs and multinationals to test, develop and demonstrate apps that could be used by the public sector. Secondly, the centre will provide a platform for public-sector departments and agencies to trial new cloud solutions to avoid a data breach.
Data security has been outlined as being an essential requisite if Ireland is to oversee practices in multinational companies based in the country under new EU regulations. Data protection commissioner Billy Hawkes recently said that his office will need more resources as Ireland becomes the designated data protection authority in Europe for companies like Facebook and Google.
Big data is not just an opportunity for Ireland to establish new security measures. It is also an opportunity for SMEs in the country to ride the big data wave by effectively using the new resources and information readily available to them.
