Irish businesses 'largely unaware of data obligations'
Apr 22 2008, 17:03 PM
Around one third of professionals within Irish businesses tasked with the upkeep and security of sensitive data are unaware of their obligations under the law, it has been revealed.
According to research carried out as part of the Eurobarometer survey on data protection within the European Union, 56 per cent of the professionals questioned said that they felt the existing legislation could not cope with the large amounts of personal information now being exchanged, with this likely to impact upon both data quality and security.
Just 16 per cent of the Irish data controllers questioned said that they were "very familiar" with current data protection legislation in the country, while 42 per cent said that they were "somewhat familiar".
This does, however, represent a slight improvement on the levels of appreciation see among businesses operating in other EU member states, though Irish companies are currently below the average when it comes to the adoption of privacy enhancing technologies (PETs), the study also found.
