Irish data to be sent to US
Jun 30 2008, 21:53 PM
Controversial plans are afoot in the EU to allow the American authorities to access confidential details on European citizens, such as credit card and banking details.
The French government is expected to use its six-month presidency of the EU to smooth the way for the deal by clearing potential obstacles, but it has been denied that officials will also be able to look at internet browsing trends.
The move is designed to combat terrorism and transnational crime and a senior Brussels official said many countries are in agreement over the idea.
"Everybody's keen on this and sees the benefit of it. The French are very keen to continue the work," he said.
"There's all sorts of information stored on computers nowadays that may be of interest to law enforcement agencies.
"If we reach agreement, we may well contemplate turning it into a binding international agreement."
Some MEPs have raised concerns that a deal of this sort may infringe on civil liberties and open Europeans to exploitation and snooping from over the Atlantic.
