Irish ID cards 'will be equipped to carry biological data'
Jan 27 2010, 11:03 AM
Public services idenity cards, which are due to be rolled out later this year, will be capable of storing biological data, it has been reported.
According to the Irish Independent, they can potentially carry fingerprints and eye scans.
However, the Department of Social and Family Affairs told the publication that there are no plans at present to store DNA details or other biometric data on the cards. Although it added that such information can be included if necessary at a later date.
The cards will initially be carried by around three million people, with the scheme set to be extended to every adult in Ireland within the next four years.
In related news, the Irish Times reported last month that the initiative is costing the government approximately 25 million (£22 million) to introduce.
Initially the cards will contain the holder's name, photograph, signature and public service number, which is used to access welfare benefits and other state services.
