IT professionals 'should speak out on data quality issues'
Sep 7 2010, 09:07 AM
Professionals working in IT should not be afraid of speaking out about data quality issues at their organisation if they feel there is a problem.
According to an article on the SmartData Collective website, the biggest troubles with data management projects occur when legitimate concerns are silenced.
This could be down to executives wanting to meet a deadline and receive a bonus for getting the work completed on time, it was suggested.
But this can have a negative impact on the company's data quality over time, said the report.
"It encourages others to ignore issues, gradually eroding data quality and integrity and, in time, confidence in the overall systems of record in an organisation," it stated.
Earlier this month, ZDNet blogger Joe McKendrick said that he had recently come across a Sybase study which laid out the ways in which high data quality can make a difference to businesses.
These include better decision making, fewer errors and lower costs.
