Many companies 'face data quality issues'

May 25 2010, 11:36 AM

The vast amount of information that companies create and store these days means that many businesses face data quality issues.

This is according to Jon Collins of Freeform Dynamics, who noted that "our ability to keep tabs on everything that we create is showing itself to be increasingly inadequate".

Writing for The Register, he pointed out that some organisations face huge challenges in this area.

"Information stored months or even years ago contains errors of varying forms, from spelling mistakes to storing important data items in the wrong fields because that was the only option at the time," Mr Collins explained.

In order to improve data quality, companies must know exactly what information they hold, which departments are using it and for what purpose, he added.

Speaking recently, Daragh O'Brien, former director of publicity at the International Association for Information and Data Quality, said concentrating on data consistency will be increasingly important for companies in the months ahead.
