Monitoring data quality 'is essential'
Feb 10 2010, 11:59 AM
Information is the most valuable resource a business has and it is vital to ensure that it is kept accurate and up-to-date.
This is according to Arkady Maydanchik of the eLearningCurve, who noted that companies want more data than ever and want "each piece of data to serve more purposes".
Writing a guest post for Data Quality Pro, he claimed that incomplete or misunderstood information changes data from an asset into a liability.
Mr Maydanchik pointed out that quality should be monitored at various points along the information chain and not just at the source.
"In the world where scores of systems exchange huge volumes of data at breakneck speed, it is unwise to completely relegate data quality management to the source systems," he added.
Writing for recently for Information Management, Joel Curry noted that companies will struggle to fulfil the expectations of their clients and customers unless they implement a data quality strategy.
