New data security centre opened in Belfast
Sep 24 2009, 11:52 AM
A new Centre for Secure Information Technologies (CSIT) has opened at Queen's University in Belfast.
The £25 million facility is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the Technology Strategy Board and the university itself, as well as several partner organisations.
Bringing together expertise in areas such as data strategy and wireless network enabled systems, the centre will pioneer the concept of converged security.
Professor John McCanny, Principal Investigator at CSIT, said the facility has a strong entrepreneurial ethos.
"We're confident that we'll be able to fast-track the development of marketable applications of our technologies to the benefit of UK industry and the wider economy," he added.
Some of the projects researchers will be working on include the use of ultra-powerful processors to make surfing the internet safer and the development of a high-speed data processor capable of offering "unprecedented" protection from internet-borne malware.
In related news, IT professionals from across the world gathered in London earlier this week to attend the annual Gartner Information Security Summit.
