New Shetland data centre 'gets green light'
Apr 30 2010, 09:00 AM
Plans for a new £12 million data centre in Shetland have been given the green light.
Sheltand Islands Council has signed a memorandum of understanding with Alchemy Plus to develop a state-of-the-art facility, capable of housing 300 high density IT equipment racks.
Steve Chisholm, the company's Chief Executive, said the centre will be powered by renewable energy.
"We decided to come to Shetland because of a combination of resources that Shetland has to offer: fibre optic connections to the outside world that match the best of any other data centre worldwide [and] renewable energy solutions," he commented.
The islands also offer a security and stability that will be attractive to clients around the world, Mr Chisholm added.
According to the BBC, environmental campaign group Greenpeace recently urged organisations such as Facebook, Apple and Mircosoft to power their data centres with renewable energy.
