Older people 'at risk of identify fraud'
Jun 30 2010, 11:34 AM
Older people need to be wary of the risks of identity fraud, it has been claimed.
According to IdentityTruth, an increasing number of senior citizens are being targeted over the phone and by email.
The organisation noted that retiring generates a great deal of paperwork and advised that people invest in a shredder so that sensitive letters can be destroyed.
It pointed out that anyone downsizing and moving house should ensure they know the whereabouts of documents at all times.
"Organisation is definitely key. Keep everything that lists any financial information your files, tax archives, bills, bank statements, check books and credit cards - in a lock box on move day," IdentityTruth added.
Writing for the Daily Telegraph earlier this month, Rose Murray-West said it is important that people act quickly if they fear they may be a victim of identity theft.
Notify the authorities immediately, as well as your credit card provider, she commented.
