Online companies 'must protect privacy of consumers'
May 26 2010, 15:33 PM
Online companies must make an effort to protect the privacy of internet users.
This is according to Anita Coles, policy officer at Liberty, who said organisations must ensure they act responsibly.
"People are becoming more and more concerned. We've seen [that] with the Facebook reports recently of a lot of people voting with their feet and leaving Facebook," she commented.
It is in every company's best interests to ensure they respect the privacy of users because customers are going to become increasingly dissatisfied with current arrangements, Ms Coles added.
Google recently came under fire after it was revealed that the search engine had mistakenly been collecting payload data from wireless internet networks.
This came to light after Germany's Data Protection Authority asked the search engine provider to carry out an audit of the information collected by its Street View cars.
Alan Eustace, senior vice president of engineering and research at Google, apologised and said the company would learn from its mistakes.
