Organisations 'must give more attention to data quality'
Mar 30 2010, 11:59 AM
Improving data quality should be a top priority for businesses and public sector organisations.
This is according to expert David Lacey, who noted that poor information management can have major implications.
Writing in his blog for ComputerWeekly.com, he said he has been concerned about the quality of databases for most of his career.
"It's been bad in most organisations I've encountered and it's likely to get progressively worse with increasing centralisation and recycling of data," Mr Lacey commented.
He explained that carrying out checks on information is much more cost effective than repairing damage at a later stage.
It is vital to encourage greater attention to the issue and, if the data quality community are not able to get it moved up the business agenda, then it may be time for security managers to get behind the them, Mr Lacey added.
According to databasejournal.com, in order to make improvements, businesses must understand why their applications create bad data in the first place.
