Organisations 'should develop a data quality culture'
Jul 22 2010, 10:29 AM
Organisations that build data quality into their ethos will be able to manage data-related issues instinctively when they arise, it has been suggested.
Dylan Jones, Founder and Editor of Data Quality Pro, said it is important for businesses to recognise when they have a problem.
He noted that many organisations are "in denial" until data quality issues are hitting their bottom line.
"With an area of data quality 'pain' identified you then need to find a sponsor to fund a small, tightly scoped improvement. This should generate a positive return on investment ideally within days, not years. You now have a case study to demonstrate the value of data quality management," Mr Jones commented.
Writing recently for SearchDataManagement.com earlier this month, Danette McGilvray, the president of information quality and data governance at consultancy Granite Falls Consulting, said most data issues originate where information is generated - on the business side of an organisation.
However, she noted that dealing with these issues is often seen as the sole responsibility of data management professionals.
