Poor data quality 'biggest problem in business intelligence projects'

Sep 9 2010, 09:57 AM

Problems with data quality have been cited as the leading issue for organisations conducting business intelligence deployments.

According to a new study from the US-based Business Application Research Center (BARC), poor data quality was named by 18 per cent of companies as a problem when conducting such initiatives, ahead of low query performance on 16 per cent.

Melanie Mack, BARC's Head of Research, said query performance has actually been named as the biggest problem in the previous three years her organisation has conducted this study.

"But while vendors have routinely blamed poor data quality for implementations that faltered in the past, for the first time we are seeing end-users agree on this key issue," she stated.

Earlier this month, an article on the SmartData Collective website advised IT professionals to speak out about data quality problems occurring in data management projects.

It said it is important to ensure legitimate concerns are raised to prevent worse problems in the future.
