Poor data quality can lead to expensive project delays

Enterprises are spending billions of pounds on business intelligence (BI) to get the most from their stores of information, but poor data quality is leading to significant problems.
That is according to Forbes magazine, which suggested that unnecessary and inaccurate data undermines the benefits offered by BI and poses obstacles to the smooth running of enterprise projects.
The financial publication cited statistics indicating that 93 percent of companies have suffered significant setbacks recently because of poor data quality.
It explained: "As you try to manipulate data, you discover that information fields are missing, they have been inconsistently filled out, they are full of wrong values and they have myriad other problems.
"Nothing can go forward until these problems are fixed, causing expensive delays."
Forbes suggested that most data quality problems are due to the fact that little time is spent planning and funding the proper collection of data.
Last month, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council in Ireland reported that it is using a new data strategy to improve its energy-efficiency.
