Postcodes to be introduced across Ireland
Dec 14 2009, 10:08 AM
Postcodes will be introduced across Ireland over the coming years, it has been announced.
Minister for communications Eamonn Ryan is due to issue tenders for the design and implementation of the new system shortly.
A report commissioned by the government revealed that postal codes will lead to financial savings and improve delivery times, particularly in secluded rural areas.
The new system is also likely to be of benefit to the emergency services.
In total, approximately 1.7 million addresses will need to be coded, with An Post set to play a vital role in the transition.
A government Working Group first recommended the introduction of postcodes in 2005, suggesting that it would help to boost national competitiveness, as well as assisting with the provision of public services across the country.
It is thought the country will be divided into approximately 200 post towns, with each one comprising between 40 and 50 properties.
