Travis Perkins 'to improve data quality'
Mar 5 2010, 13:26 PM
Builder's merchant Travis Perkins is set to improve its product database, it has been revealed.
According to Computerworlduk.com, the company has signed a three-year deal with DataFlux and will use dfPower Studio technology to standardise descriptions and make the search process more efficient.
Sean Sinclair, Group Head of Data Development at the company, commented: "The problem we have is that different manufacturers of similar products use different terminology. All the different words used make it difficult to find a product."
It is likely to take between 12 and 18 months to standardise formats and descriptions, he added.
The company currently has approximately 240,000 product lines on its database.
Writing earlier this month for his OCDQ blog, Jim Harris noted that data quality is "vitally important" and has a huge bearing on whether an organisation is successful or not.
He noted that many businesses fail to realise its importance.
