US Open Government Directive 'to help improve data quality'
Dec 14 2009, 10:08 AM
The US government is calling on federal agencies to improve transparency and the quality of their data, it has been reported.
According to cnet.com, the Open Government Directive aims to establish a system of public participation and collaboration.
"Openness will strengthen our democracy and promote efficiency and effectiveness in government," the document notes.
The directive requires departments to make data sets available to the public regularly and to each create an open government plan.
John Wonderlich, Policy Director at the Washington-based Sunlight Foundation, said that now the details have been made public, his organisation is very excited.
"They're really taking on a lot of initiatives and doing so in an aggressive fashion. We couldn't have written it better ourselves. It's very ambitious," he told the news provider.
The Obama administration announced its commitment to improving openness earlier this year when it issued an official memorandum to the heads of executive departments and agencies.
