Use of cloud-based applications 'will rise in coming years'
May 21 2010, 11:23 AM
An increasing number of businesses are set to use cloud computing solutions in the future, it has been suggested.
Larry Fisher, Research Director of next-generation research at ABI Research, said there are a number of reasons for this, including the popularity of netbooks, which come equipped with operating systems but little in the way of application software.
He noted that people and organisations are also keen to avoid data losses and want to store their documents in a safe way.
"Consumers will increasingly use free cloud-based applications in the coming years, which will get them used to storing documents, photos, et cetera in the cloud, and to sharing/working on them with others," Mr Fisher commented.
According to BBC Business Editor Tim Weber, the solution "is going mainstream" and being used by organisations of all sizes.
He noted that Bryan Kinsella, Chief Information Officer at Rentokil, recently used cloud computing to help tackle the problem of trying to combine 40 different email systems across 50 countries.
